Compliance checklist feature for legal and case documentation

Duration: September - Present

Role: Product Designer & Developer

CONTEXT & RESEARCH

Understanding failure points in compliance workflows

Early interviews with legal and operations professionals surfaced repeat risks in current workflows:

  • Current calendar and research workflow is centralized on a platforms such as Clio, which users struggle to adopt.
  • Rules and procedures differ by document type and jurisdiction and takes a significant amount of time to research.
  • Missing deadlines is catastrophic for lawyers due to severe consequences for their clients.

CONCEPT BREAKDOWN

Reducing risk in document-heavy legal workflows

Pleach is a lightweight compliance tool where users can process case documents by dragging and dropping. Based on the document type, the tool generates a tailored checklist of compliance rules and procedural requirements.

Checklists may be edited, removed and downloaded to keep on file and mitigate malpractice exposure and ensuring teams maintain a defensible record of completed work.

IMPROVED DESIGNS

Creating an easy-to-use tool with straightforward design

  • User-friendly design with simple steps and feedback intake.
  • Rule-based engine for parsing documents to be used as a placeholder before validation.
  • Edit, move, or delete checklist items, so the user can make adjustments after the parsing.
  • Completed lists can be downloaded and preserved for auditing and legal defense.

PROTOTYPE

A lightweight compliance feature with potential to scale

The working prototype includes:

  • Simple document upload and processing workflow.
  • Editable, case-specific compliance checklists.
  • Downloadable checklist for later review or audit.

Projected Impact

Reduced risk of missed procedural tasks.
Clearer audit trails for malpractice investigations.
Human-validated automation rather than full delegation to AI.

REFLECTION

Next Steps

The next phase focuses on validating the Pleach prototype with real users working in legal and compliance workflows. I plan to conduct usability testing sessions to observe how users upload documents, interpret the generated compliance checklist. User interviews will help refine the interaction model, determine where AI assistance adds value, and validate that the concept meaningfully improves efficiency.
